* Automated External Defibrillator Appeal

August 22nd, 2011

All incidents of sudden cardiac arrest occur in the work place or at home – far away from hospitals and medical facilities.  It is vitally important to administer treatment quickly because a person’s chance of survival drops 10% for every minute that passes between cardiac arrest and getting the heart restarted.

That’s where the AED machine comes in. An AED machine (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable machine that analyses the heartbeat and can restart it, by administering a brief, controlled electrical shock. The AED machine is “user- friendly” to operate and guides the user through the necessary stages to administer the correct treatment to the sufferer.

Here is a list of  locations where AED machines can be found in case of an emergency & pictures of training provided by St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine staff:

W.O.W. Winner Announced in Dec./2010 @ the Ritz

February 17th, 2011

For sixteen weeks, ten contestants have been battling for the title of 2010’s “WOW Warrior”.

On Saturday 19 December, the Cayman Heart Fund (CHF) announced the winners of the 3rd annual War on Weight (WOW) transformation contest. After sixteen weeks of the Cayman Heart Fund’s lifestyle transformation program, the WOW committee announced a total group weight loss of 168 lbs and revealed the winner and 2010’s WOW warrior.

Glenda Dilbert-Davis took this year’s title as WOW Warrior with a total weight loss percentage of 16.8% (35.5 lbs), a body fat loss of 1.8%, and a total of 30 inches lost on her 5’3” frame. “I am most proud of my overall weight, which surpassed the personal goal I set when I signed up for the completion of between 15-20 lbs. I am also proud of my increased fitness level and endurance. When I started WOW I couldn’t even jog for 5 minutes, now I can jog for 45 minutes and longer if I really wanted to,” said WOW winner Glenda Dilbert-Davis. Close competition from beginning to end, fellow competitor and Dilbert-Davis’ workout buddy, Carmen Bell came in second with a weight loss percentage of 14.2%, and only .5% behind her was Claudette Warren with 13.7%.

The results were announced at WOW 2010’s finale breakfast amongst contestants, supporters, and the Cayman Heart Fund at 7 Restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton. Also in attendance, special guest Patrick House, NBC’s The Biggest Loser winner and his family. Mr. House gave attendees tips he learned from The Biggest Loser and was presented with a WOW commemorative T-shirt by WOW Chair, Leandra Charles, for his personal weight loss achievement.

“This year the program was a huge success and competition was fierce. Contestants were determined to follow the program, work hard, and get results. With the addition of new components such as group therapy, “Pay it forward” community involvement, monthly social events, and Saturday activities, contestants were exposed to a variety of ways to stay fit and have fun. Spending five to ten hours a week together, participants created a tight support system and close friendships that will last beyond the end of the program,” said Ms. Charles.

As a program completely dependent on sponsorship and donations, with the generosity of local businesses the three top prize winner went home with prize packages exceeding $5000.00. Prizes included airfare and accommodation to Cayman Brac by Cayman Airways and The Alexander Hotel, Blackberry from LIME, fitness memberships for ENERGY, Flow Yoga, Body Sculptor, and Curves, a full makeover by Le Mer Spa and photo shoot at Picture This, a weekend stay at the Marriott Beach Resort, water sports by Red Sail Sports and Parasail Professionals, and gift certificates to Funky Monkey and Reflections for a new wardrobe.

Beginning in August, the challenge entails sixteen weeks of group exercise classes at Body Sculptor, a nutrition plan created by Dietitian Chad Collins, medical testing by Seven Mile Clinic and supervision by Dr. Addlesons’ office, group therapy at The Wellness Centre, and free access to local fitness activities. Contestants had over $2000.00 worth of expert advice and training.

“David quote about the program as a kick start to lifestyle change and not just a sixteen week contest.” said CHF board member David Dinner.
