Exercise

Regular, moderate physical activity is good for your heart. The CHF recommends you include at least 30 minutes or more of moderate physical activity (such as brisk walking) on most or all days of the week for health benefits. The amount of activity can be accumulated in shorter bouts, such as three 10 minute walks per day. Look for ways to be active and do something you enjoy everyday if you can.

Heart disease is largely preventable, but you may not know you’re at risk.

  • Walk rather than use the car, e.g. for a trip to the local shop.

  • Meet a girlfriend for a walk rather than a drink or a meal.

  • Get out in the garden at the weekend.

  • Get off the bus early and walk one or two stops.

  • Take the stairs, rather than the lift or escalator.

  • Walk at lunchtime with a friend or after dinner with the family.

  • Put on your favourite music and dance in the living room!

  • Join a gym, sports centre or local sporting team.

  • Organize family outings that include activities like bike riding or swimming.

  • Take up an active hobby you’ll enjoy like salsa dancing.

  • Form a walking group at work or in your neighbourhood.

  • Check with your local community college or centre about different activities to get you moving.

If you have been inactive and want to begin an exercise program, it’s a good idea to see a doctor first if you have one or more of these.
