Ken Chand Discovery Day Walk/Run 2010

July 1st, 2010

n 2008, with the help of Hugh Treadwell and DART as co-sponsor, the CHF held its first Annual Discovery Day Ken Chand Run/Walk at Camana Bay. The event was a great success and, in 2009 the management of the event was given to the Insurance Association and the location was changed.

This year we (the CHF) have taken back control of the Run/Walk and we will be holding the Ken Chand Walk/Run at the Caymana Bay on May 17, 2010.

The purpose of this years’ Run is extremely important – it is to raise significant funds for the “HEALTH4YOUTH” programme – an in-depth professional 3 year pilot scheme which has already been started at the John Gray High School and is being undertaken by a group of Doctors; psychologists; nutritionists; fitness experts in conjunction with school teachers; the H.S.A.; Ministry of Health plus Insurance Companies and is strongly supported by the CHF. The aim of this important programme is to significantly improve and implement positive changes in the health of the Island’s school-going children by changing and improving their diets and increasing their exercise programmes. It is expected that such changes will not only positively affect their physical health but could also translate into better educational results. An alarming number of children have developed increased signs of teenage diabetes and an extraordinary high level of them have childhood obesity – apparently, much higher than comparable figures form Floridian schools. These warning signs are causing real concern and are now being attended to with a degree of urgency. However, the cost of this programme is expensive – about $100k annually and funding is a problem….

We hope that you will be able to join us as sponsors, volunteers or participants in this run. Please e-mail us with your comments. We will send you further information on registration and time in the near future.
