FirstCaribbean International shows great heart

July 14th, 2010

The Cayman Heart Fund recently received a boost with a donation of funding from FirstCaribbean International.

Donating the cheque on behalf of FirstCaribbean International Bank, Ms Pat Ramoon, Director of Human Resources said she was delighted to make the contribution on behalf of the Bank: “We at FirstCaribbean International are always receptive to giving back to the community and our corporate and social responsibility demonstrated via such contributions is integral to who we are. We are particularly keen to sponsor the Cayman Heart Fund which does such tremendous work for the local community with regard to highlighting the importance of keeping a healthy heart.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of the Cayman Heart Fund, Ms Charmaine Moss, Secretary to the CHF said: “FirstCaribbean International has been a continued and well-established supporter of the Cayman Heart Fund, for which we are extremely grateful.”

Ms Moss explained that this donation will be used to assist with the funding of a variety of projects that the Cayman Heart Fund currently has on the go,

“Our 800 plus visitors to our annual Cayman Heart Fund Heart Health Fair benefit from free screenings of their blood glucose, blood pressure and BMI, vitally important numbers for keeping healthy a heart, but not cheap to administer. We also take our screening sessions to all the districts including Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Donations such as this go a tremendously long way in funding these important screenings.”

Governor new Cayman Heart Fund patron

Guest of honour at the Cayman Heart Fund’s annual Red Dress Valentine’s gala, Governor Duncan Taylor, graciously accepted the CHF’s request to be the Fund’s new patron.

During a short speech at the event, held at the Westin Casuarina over the Valentine’s weekend, Governor Taylor said he was delighted to accept the role of patron and was impressed by the turn out at the gala event, whereby female guests had all turned out resplendent in red dress. He said supporting the community gave a great deal of personal satisfaction: “When one has done something useful such as support the Cayman Heart Fund in this way it leaves one with something of a glow. There is real satisfaction in putting something back into society.”

As well as enjoying a glittering night of wonderful food and wine, music and dancing, guests also had the chance to bid for their own unique piece of artwork created by one of Cayman’s talented local artists and donated especially for the event.

Ms Suzy Soto, Chairman of the Cayman Heart Fund said the support from the public for this, the Cayman Heart Fund’s second annual Valentine’s gala, was incredible. “We managed to raise approximately CI$20,000 which is a tremendous sum that will be put towards excellent use by the Cayman Heart Fund, raising awareness and trying to prevent heart disease within Cayman’s society.”

Ms Soto was especially grateful to all the talented artists who all donated their unique paintings and sculptures to the silent and live auctions: “Our thanks go to Bendel Hydes, David Bridgeman, John Broad, John Doak, Chris Mann, CE Whitney, Charles Long, Chris Christian, Gordon Solomon, Maureen Lazarus, Nickola McCoy, Teresa Grimes, Avril Ward, Guy Harvey, Suladda, Joanne Sibley, Jasmine Russo and Al Ebanks. Most artists attended our gala evening and we are truly grateful for all their support.”

“In particular,” Ms Soto added, “we were all very impressed by John Broad’s wonderful painting that he created during the event. The lively painting depicted the talented Vivendi artistes who performed live as well as lots of vignettes from the event. John Wood eventually made the highest bid for the painting and then kindly donated it straight back to the Cayman Heart Fund! In the end the painting was purchased by David Phipps. Mr. Phipps took home a really special souvenir of the event.”

Ken Chand Discovery Day Walk/Run 2010

July 1st, 2010

n 2008, with the help of Hugh Treadwell and DART as co-sponsor, the CHF held its first Annual Discovery Day Ken Chand Run/Walk at Camana Bay. The event was a great success and, in 2009 the management of the event was given to the Insurance Association and the location was changed.

This year we (the CHF) have taken back control of the Run/Walk and we will be holding the Ken Chand Walk/Run at the Caymana Bay on May 17, 2010.

The purpose of this years’ Run is extremely important – it is to raise significant funds for the “HEALTH4YOUTH” programme – an in-depth professional 3 year pilot scheme which has already been started at the John Gray High School and is being undertaken by a group of Doctors; psychologists; nutritionists; fitness experts in conjunction with school teachers; the H.S.A.; Ministry of Health plus Insurance Companies and is strongly supported by the CHF. The aim of this important programme is to significantly improve and implement positive changes in the health of the Island’s school-going children by changing and improving their diets and increasing their exercise programmes. It is expected that such changes will not only positively affect their physical health but could also translate into better educational results. An alarming number of children have developed increased signs of teenage diabetes and an extraordinary high level of them have childhood obesity – apparently, much higher than comparable figures form Floridian schools. These warning signs are causing real concern and are now being attended to with a degree of urgency. However, the cost of this programme is expensive – about $100k annually and funding is a problem….

We hope that you will be able to join us as sponsors, volunteers or participants in this run. Please e-mail us with your comments. We will send you further information on registration and time in the near future.
